The USCG does not provide Social Security assistance. If you need Social Security information or help, call: 01 800 772 6394.
Consular Service Fees:
The only payment method for consular services is a Banamex bank check denominated in pesos.
Consulate employees cannot accept cash or credit card payments during off-site visits. Beginning with the October 19, 2016 visit, the staff of the USCG will accept only peso-denominated Banamex bank checks. It has been confirmed that the Banamex branch in Chapala can issue this type of check. It is very important that the checks be made out to “United States Disbursing Officer” or they will not be accepted for payment.
The Banamex branch is located at the following address:
The fees for USCG services vary with the exchange rate for the Mexican Peso. Please note that the exchange rate is set by the Embassy and will not usually be the same rate that can be obtained at a bank or currency exchange facility. As such, please check here to confirm the current rate of exchange and prices for consular services.
Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Mexico enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at www.Travel.State.Gov. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
Regularly monitor the State Department's website, where you can find current Travel Warnings (including the Travel Warning for Mexico), Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution. Read the Country Specific Information for Mexico. For additional information, refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” on the State Department’s website.
