The Wilkes Education Center

Located two blocks from the main LCS campus, the LCS Wilkes Education Center is a hub of educational activity.   The Mexican community affectionately refers to the WEC as the Biblioteca (library), while the ex-pats simply call it the Wilkes.

The WEC houses Ajijic’s only Spanish-language reference and reading library, with circulation averaging 75 users per day. The library and computer lab offer students a quiet setting to do their homework.

The  Summer Remedial Program   has been active since 1999.  Local public school teachers refer elementary school students who they believe would benefit from the program.  Instruction for the four week summer session is provided by teachers from Guadalajara and wraps up with a field trip to the zoo.

WEC History
After retiring in the United States, Ed Wilkes and his wife Orul traveled extensively in Mexico, finally settling in Ajijic during the early 70’s. Ed, an avid reader with a keen interest in education, made provision to donate his home on Galeana, Ajijic, to the LCS upon his death. Ed died in 1997 and two years later his house was retrofitted and named the Wilkes Education Center (WEC). The center is dedicated to help improve the education of the Mexican community. A small grant from Fideicomiso Para La Cultura Mexico/USA was given to the biblioteca (library) for the purchase of books.
